Was it a knock that had woken her?

Was it a knock that had woken her? She had been lapping in and out of consciousness for hours now, like the tide rushing in to shore. In it came, wide awake, awareness, a flurry of sensations and feelings. Back down again, her eyes drooped, the world sealed away, her dreams and imagination lighting up again.

She had been in this state for a long while. In truth she fought the tide every morning, hitting the snooze frequently, allowing herself to be pulled in by the ripcurrent of fatigue. Allowing herself all too often to miss the proper wake up time, to sleep in, to miss her morning departure.

But today was different. In between the chirps and bells and chimes and all other manner of alarms she had set, a new one appeared today. A knock. Not prerecorded or electronic. This one was at her door.

She bolted upright, escaping the tide. She rushed out of bed, clumsily slipping only one of her slippers on.

Who could that have been? Since the pandemic had started she hadn't had any visitors. She'd been indoors for 8 months straight now. Food delivery, virtual work, it really was the perfect time for an introvert.

But her Eden now had an intruder. A knocker at the door. Who could it be?
