Autumn Sonata (1978)
★★★★★
I feel so bad for the daughter. This movie honestly just left a pit in my stomach; it was so sad watching everything unfold. The pent up emotions from childhood and the lifelong distress over what had and hadnt been said.
Ingmar Bergman is just such a powerhouse I don't understand it. The concept isnt at all too lofty but his script is just soo good and the way he directs his movies is so delicate. His deliberate long takes and the framing/blocking of his scenes. And the emotion he gets out of the performances. I mean Liv Ullman is always superb but Ingrid Bergman WOW. I think I've only seen her in Casablanca and I thought she was good but kind of interchangeable with other Holywood actresses of her day. Never really understood just how phenomenal she was until now. You know what, now that I think about it, she was also really good in Casablanca but maybe it just didnt allow her to express her range? Idk she blew me away in this one. Love seeing a Bergman in color too
