Film review
Broadcast News (1987)
★★★★½
Really really enjoyed this. It played such an amazing balance of romance/love triangle tropes, while also having a meaningful, profound message about the news and journalistic integrity.
Couple of thoughts:
Super interesting to watch this now when the movie has characters so concerned with the slippage of the news more and more into sensationalism rather than actual news. We've absolutely crossed the point of no return in the 21st century. Interviews heavily edited, incredibly biased media, a circus on the news 24/7. It almost made me laugh how idealistic and pure-intentioned about the news one could be back then. I know its been said a million times but this movie would play a great companion piece with network
Holly Hunter has a similar energy to Sandra Bullock in my eyes and I wonder if they shared a similar reputation - the cute leading lady you cant help but falling for over the runtime
The writing was just really incredible. Overall plot structure, character motivations, show-dont-tell, witty, clever, meaningful. Really good stuff.
The cinematography wasnt necessarily anything special but that swivel shot around Tom's head the first time he's hosting into the split diopter shot of his earpiece and Jane was just *chef's kiss*
I don't use this word lightly, but I "yearn" for movies like this to be made again. Charming, clever, well-written and with something to actually say
(Now that I think about it is the movie itself an indicator of the compromise that maybe must have been made in news - smart AND entertaining?)
