Citizen Kane (1941)

★★★★★

Unbelievable. So cool seeing it with a packed crowd at AMC Universal in LA. The jokes landed. The sharp lines landed. Its just the perfect script. Even by today's standards of filmmaking this one's top notch - and it was 85 years ago. Foundational in inventing some of modern cinema and filmmaking techniques.
Welles' performance really stood out to me this time. Easily one of the best performances I can remember and should be (if it isn't already) in conversation for one of the greatest performances ever. He's a different person completely in the different stages of the movie. It's remarkable.
I first watched this when I was starting to REALLY get into movies and even then I appreciated it. But now, with more movies and more movie knowledge under my belt, I appreciated it even more. The framing, the blocking, the deep focus and lighting. Stuff that I thought was just cool or pretty before I now appreciate as the genius that it is. How revolutionary the things this movie accomplishes is.
Really deserves its place as one of the greatest of all time.

AND - this thing moves. The story hooks you until the end. Isn't just a movie that you watch and appreciate, but you're actually bored because its old and has different pacing. No no no. This thing moves.
